This is an exciting opportunity to join the country’s premier oncology center at a time when we are expanding to establish a network of hospitals across the country. Peshawar is planned to open its doors to the public in 2015. In the first instance we are looking to recruit a team of highly dedicated professionals to help establish clinical services at this new unit.

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC), Peshawar is pleased to invite applications for the following positions. Selected candidates will undergo initial training at SKMCH&RC, Lahore and, following successful completion of this, will be appointed to positions at SKMCH&RC Peshawar, upon commencement of its operations.

1. Consultant Physician / Hospitalist (Internal Medicine) – Peshawar

The Hospital is looking for highly-motivated and committed individuals to undertake positions as Consultant Physicians in the Department of Internal Medicine, who will be expected to provide Internal Medicine expertise in the day-to-day management of sick cancer patients coming to the Emergency Room, Outpatient Clinic and those admitted at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Peshawar, Pakistan.

The Physicians will also have the opportunity to collaborate with oncologists to develop the Internal Medicine department and improve the outcome of cancer treatment at SKMCH&RC, Peshawar. They will also liaise closely with surgeons and physicians in other specialties and allied staff within the Hospital.

2. Consultant Paediatric Oncologist – Peshawar

The post is full-time, based primarily at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Peshawar, Pakistan. This is a post for a highly motivated and committed individual to undertake a key role as a full time Consultant Paediatric Oncologist in the Department of Paediatric Oncology.

The individual is expected to provide Paediatric Oncology expertise in the ongoing clinical care and management of cancer patients. The consultant is expected to have or develop a specialist interest in Leukaemias, Lymphomata, Solid tumours (bone and soft tissue sarcomata, Wilm’s tumour, liver tumours etc.)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • MRCP (UK) / MRCPCH (UK) with evidence of three years post membership training in Paediatric Oncology.
  • American Board in Paediatrics, with sub-specialty boards in Paediatric Haematology and Oncology.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in Paediatric Oncology following the MRCP or MRCPCH / American Board of Paediatrics.

3. Consultant Medical Oncologist – Peshawar

The post is full-time, for a highly motivated individual, who will be expected to take part in developing cancer services under the umbrella of the Shaukat Khanum Healthcare System, in Peshawar. The appointee will provide outpatient and inpatient cancer treatment services. The individual will collaborate with colleagues within the department to develop Oncology Services and liase closely with Surgeons and Physicians in other specialties and staff within the hospital.

  • MRCP (UK) with CCST in Medical Oncology.
  • American Board in Internal Medicine, with sub-specialty boards in Haematology and / or Medical Oncology.

4. Radiologist (Part-Time) – Peshawar

This post is part-time, based at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Peshawar, Pakistan.

This is a post for a highly motivated and committed individual to undertake a key role as a part-time radiologist at Peshawar.  The appointee will be expected to have expertise in all aspects of radiology, but with specific expertise and interest in plain film radiology, ultrasonography & women’s imaging, including mammography. The appointee will be expected to interpret radiographs and mammograms and to perform ultrasound scans and ultrasound guided biopsies, FNA’s and drainage procedures. With availability of PACS and RIS, there will be off-site support from SKMCH Lahore. The purpose of this post is to develop radiology services at the Peshawar Hospital.

5. Senior Instructor (Radiology) – Peshawar

This is a three year position for a highly motivated and committed individual to undertake a key role as a radiologist in the Shaukat Khanum healthcare system. The applicant should have the full FCPS in Radiology, and will work, initially under supervision, but with increasing independence, for two years in Pakistan, to be followed by a third year overseas. The first year will be spent in Peshawar, the second in Lahore and the third will be spent in a training position in a Western hospital, to be arranged by SKMCH&RC. Candidates who complete this three year position successfully will be eligible for appointment to a full-time position as a consultant radiologist at SKMCH&RC, Peshawar.

6. Senior Instructor (Medical Oncology)

The Hospital is looking for highly-motivated and committed individuals to undertake positions as Senior Instructor in the Department of Medical Oncology, who will be expected to participate, support and enhance the provision of Medical Oncology services at the Hospital.

After completing two-years at SKMCH & RC, Lahore the individual will be required to complete mandatory one-year period of overseas training at an affiliated institution in the US, UK, Canada or equivalent approved location which may be arranged by SKMCH & RC if a paid position is not available. Following successful completion of this training, the candidate will be eligible for a full time consultant position at one of our hospitals, in Lahore or in Peshawar.

The selected individual is expected to demonstrate excellence in provision of all aspects of medical care and liase closely with oncologists, surgeons and physicians in other specialties and allied staff within the Hospital. He/she will be expected to participate in the academic activities of the department including presentations, research, audit, and teaching junior doctors and nurses.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • FCPS in Internal Medicine / MRCP/ American Boards in Internal Medicine.
  • Additional qualifications (Sub-specialty fellowships) will be preferred.
  • Must have evidence of some experience / training in the relevant field.
  • Full registration with PMDC.

8. Senior Instructor (Radiation Oncology)

The Hospital is looking for highly-motivated and committed individuals to undertake positions as Senior Instructor in the Department of Radiation Oncology, who will be expected to develop and strengthen the existing Radiation Oncology services at the SKMCH & RC, Lahore.

After completing two-years at SKMCH & RC, Lahore the individual will be required to complete mandatory one-year period of overseas training at an affiliated institution in the US, UK, Canada or equivalent approved location which may be arranged by SKMCH & RC if a paid position is not available. Following successful completion of this training, the candidate will be eligible for a full time consultant position at one of our hospitals, in Lahore or in Peshawar.

The selected individual is expected to provide clinical care to the patients in various specialties – lung cancer, gastro-intestinal cancer, hepato-biliary cancer, head and neck cancer, breast cancer, brain tumours. The individual is expected to develop close collaborative links with clinicians working in his/her specialty and other specialties and allied staff within the Hospital. He/she will be expected to participate in the academic activities of the department including presentations, research, audit, and teaching junior doctors and nurses.

  • FCPS in Radiation Oncology.
  • Must have evidence of experience/training in Radiation Oncology.

10. Fellowship In Medical Oncology (Peshawar)

Applications are invited for a Fellowship in Medical Oncology, which is a part of an established training programme recognised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan.

There is special emphasis on a multi-disciplinary approach to the management of cancer with site specialist teams comprising of medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists, specialty physicians, radiologists and pathologists. This offers a unique experience for the trainees to learn and understand all aspects of management of solid tumours and haematological malignancies, which will prepare them to become well-trained, highly-qualified oncologists according to international standards. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on research, with a number of cancer treatment trials in progress at any time.

The fellowship training period is 3 years, which eventually leads to the FCPS in Medical Oncology upon successful completion of training and passing the examination.  Fellows who perform extremely well during their training may be offered an additional year of training at an affiliated institution in the US or UK, which will be arranged by SKMCH&RC. Once Fellows have the requisite overseas experience, they become eligible for an appointment at consultant level at SKMCH&RC, Peshawar.

Job Description:

  • The selected candidate(s) will rotate through various site specialist oncology teams over 3 years to allow exposure to the whole range of oncology. They will be supervised by consultant oncologists during each attachment with regular appraisals to ensure adequate progress in training.
  • The selected candidate(s) will be involved in patient care in outpatient clinics, inpatient floors, and the chemotherapy bay.
  • They will participate in an on call rota for assessment and management of patients presenting to the emergency assessment room.
  • They will be expected to participate in the academic activities of the department including presentations, research, audit, and teaching junior doctors and nurses.

  • MRCP (UK)
